Anna Edeghoghene Enerieta - Published October 28, 2025

Security is a massive factor in modern life, and honestly, nothing beats keeping an eye on one's property 24/7. The closed-circuit Television(CCTV) system has moved from being a luxury for big companies to an essential tool for everyone.
Mastering the installation and networking of a modern CCTV system is not about drilling holes and running cables, but about understanding the network technology that makes remote viewing possible.
Early Code Institute stands out as the perfect training institute where you can start your journey. Focusing on practical, vocational lessons to help you navigate the networking system properly.
Introduction to CCTV Networking and Installation
Closed-Circuit Television(CCTV), also known as video surveillance, is an important part of modern security infrastructure. From homes to businesses, schools, and government institutions, CCTV is widely used to secure and monitor various activities, helps in crime prevention, and ensures safety worldwide.
CCTV networking and installation is the process of setting up surveillance systems that combine cameras, recorders, and networking devices to provide reliable security monitoring. Unlike the traditional standalone CCTV setup, modern systems are connected through networks, allowing footage to be accessed and managed locally or remotely.
The installation process involves choosing the right cameras, running cables, setting up power supplies, configuring network devices, and enabling secure remote access. Proper installation ensures clear video, smooth recording, and reliable system performance.
In the United States, the first commercial closed-circuit television system became available in 1949 from Remington Rand and was designed by CBS Laboratories, called Vericon- Wikipedia

Overview of CCTV Systems and Components
A CCTV system is a private video surveillance setup that transmits a signal from cameras to a limited, closed set of monitors and recording devices. The term CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) refers to the fact that the video signal is not publicly broadcast, making it a secure, private network for monitoring.
Below are the Key Components of The CCTV System
- Camera: This is simply the eyes of the entire system. This hardware captures the raw visual information of the monitored area. Its fundamental function is to use a lens and an image sensor to convert light into a continuous video signal.
- Recorder: Can either be a Digital Video Recorder(DVR) or a Network Video Recorder(NVR), acts as the central control unit, or the brain. Its main function is critical: it receives the video signal from the cameras, compresses the video to save precious space, manages the recording schedule, and provides the interface for viewing both live and archived footage
- Cabling: Which is the physical pathway, or the nerves, that allows all the components to communicate and transmit data. The cable's function is to carry the video signal and often the electrical power. For modern IP systems, this is typically an Ethernet cable (Cat6), which can also carry power via PoE.
- Storage (HDD): Refers to the digital memory component, which is almost always a large-capacity Hard Disk Drive (HDD) installed inside the recorder. Its sole purpose is to permanently save the compressed video footage for later review, playback, and evidence
- Power Supply: is the source of electrical energy required to operate every single component. Its function is to convert standard AC wall power into the specific low-voltage DC power required by the cameras and the recorder. In modern systems, this function is often integrated into the network switch using Power over Ethernet(PoE), eliminating the need for separate camera power outlets.
- Components: This is the collective term for all the individual physical parts that make up the whole system. This serves as a checklist and structural definition, ensuring you account for every piece of hardware, from the smallest connector and mounting bracket to the biggest recorder and monitor, needed for a complete and functional setup.
- Functionality: This refers to the specific operational capabilities and tasks the system is designed to perform after installation. This covers everything the system actually does: capturing video, recording only on motion detection, providing secure remote access to a mobile phone, sending alerts, and allowing simultaneous viewing of multiple camera feeds.
