FCT-IRS Partners with Early Code for Intensive Data Analytics Training

Data is becoming and increasingly important part of how organizations understand their operations, solve problems, and make informed decisions. For government organizations, the ability to properly collect, analyse, and interprete data can make a significant difference in how policies are developed and services are delivered.

Recognising the importance of data-driven decision-making in taxation the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) partnered with Early Code Institute for an intensive data analytics training designed to equip hhe FCT-IRS officials with practical skills for analysing and interpreting taxpayers' data.

This Program was designed to enable FCT-IRS Officials to analyse taxpayers' data. With this analysis, government officials will not just have data stored on their system, but rather they will be able to understand the patterns, relationships, and various factors that may hinder or encourage quick tax payment from its citizens.

This program wasn't just about training but about understanding how government officials can transform raw data of taxpayers into insights and findings that wouldn't be spotted by the bare eye but by the use of a business intelligence tool such as Power BI to analyse data. Gone are the days when data was just kept in a storeroom and was hidden from the Public. Why Data Analytics Matters in Taxation

Taxpayer data contains valuable information that can help government agencies understand payment patterns, identify relationships within datasets, and recognise factors that may influence timely tax payments. Also having large amount of data does not automaticlly mean we can make better decisions from it.

Through the trainjng , Early Code Institute explained to FCT-IRS officials the importance of moving beyound simply storing taxpayer information. with the right nalytical techniques and tools, data can provide answers to important questions and reveal patterns that may not be immediately visible when looking at raw figures.

The training focused on developing the ability to turn data into useful information and ultimately insightfs that can support taxation policies and adminstrative decisions.

Data Visualization and Report View

Under this segment, participants were introduced to the various sub-components that make up the report view. The subcomponents were the filters, Visualization, Data, and the Ribbons. Also, in this segment, participants were taught how to translate data from tables into diagrams, whereby they observe the pattern, relationships, and insights that are hidden at first. Below are some other important features taught during the training, which are important for the officials to understand and apply in their day-to-day work:

Simplicity

Simplicity means avoiding unnecessary elements that can make a report difficult to understand. Reports are to be made simple so that people should be able to get a grasp or have an idea about what the report is about. Participants were encouraged not to overcrowd a dashboard with too many charts or visual elements on one page. Instead, each visual should have a clear purpose and contribute to the overall message of the report.

Attractiveness

Reports becomes beautiful when the use of colours are involved. Participants were advised on the usage of colours, at least two, for their report and one font for the text. They observed that uniformity in the usage of colours and text font was of top importance. Also, when reports are attractive, end users tend to look for their reports.

Ribbons

Under the ribbons, the Officials understood that ribbons were various menus that had separate functions to perform various actions. The officials understood that any action that was made using any of the menus on the ribbon would be automatically reflected on the background page. These menus were File, Home, View, etc.

Visualizations

Here, participants were exposed to the various diagrams made available for end users. They don’t just pick any diagram for their choice rather, they understand when to and when not to pick a diagram. This boils down to what you want to achieve at the end of the day. These activities include picking a diagram and selecting columns that will be used on the diagram.

Under visualization, participants understood that it is not just important to pick the right diagrams but to format the diagrams, and their features vary from diagram to diagram. With formats, the beauty of the diagram and visibility come to life on the page report.

Data

Here, Officials understood that if we are to translate the raw data into diagrams, we need a section that contains all the information about the data; that’s where a section's title data come into place. It doesn’t just hold columns but also contains all calculations that were done using DAX on the table view.

Representation and storytelling

After Dashboards have been constructed, it is important to communicate your insights to stakeholders and non-technical users to provide solutions or strategies. Without storytelling, officials understood that what they had was just data. With storytelling, Officials will be able to convert plain numbers into stories and situations that will be useful to implement policies on the taxation industry.
