What is a Local Area Network(LAN)?
A Local Area Network(LAN) is a computer network that connects devices within a limited geographical area, such as schools, homes, and office buildings. A LAN is like a digital neighborhood where all devices can communicate with each other and share information.
With Lan, you can share files and even connect your internet to other devices on the network. LANs are usually fast, secure, making them perfect for applications that require high-speed data transfer.
They are also relatively easy to set up and manage, especially if you are using a router. Whether you are working from home or streaming live, LANs are usually perfect for basic usage. Below are a few examples of LAN:
- Home Network - Smallest LAN
- School Network - Educational LAN
- Office Network - Client-server LAN
- Hotel/Wing Network - Hybrid LAN

Types of Local Area Network(LAN)
There are several types of Local Area Networks(LANs), each with its own characteristics and applications. Below are some of the most common types of LANs:
- Wired LAN: This type of LAN uses physical cables to connect devices to the network. Wired LANs are preferred in environments that need the fastest possible speeds and stable connections, such as connecting a high-performance desktop computer.
- Wireless LAN: This type of LAN uses wireless signals to connect devices to the network. It is convenient and flexible, but may be more vulnerable to security threats.
- Client-Server LAN: This type of LAN is the standard model for most middle to large-scale businesses where control and data storage are centralized. They rely on the server to provide services such as accessing a shared database or logging in. It is known for its high performance rate.
- Virtual LAN(VLAN): A VLAN is a virtual network that is created within a larger physical network. It is used to segment networks and improve security and management.
- Peer-to-Peer (P2P) LAN: This is the simplest type of LAN most often found in home networks or very small offices, where devices communicate with each other. It acts as both the client and the server simultaneously.

Equipment You'll Use in Live Training
The equipment is as follows:
- VoIP phones: These are phones that are used to make calls using internet connections(voice over IP).
- Cat6 Patch Panel: This is a big, centralized board where all cables that run the wall of a building meet up. It helps to keep cables neatly arranged and well labeled.
- 3 Network Switches: Smart devices that connect multiple computers, phones, and cameras inside your LAN.
- Jacks and Connectors: These are the small, plastic pieces that finish the cable installation: the jacks are the wall outlets, and the connectors are the plugs on the end of the patch cables.
- Cable Crimping Tools: The essential mechanical tool used to secure the plastic connector onto the end of a cut network cable.
- Networking Cables: The copper wires that physically carry the data signals (the electricity). We use the modern Category 6 (Cat6) standard.
Why Live Equipment Matters in Training
Reading about network cables and routers is one thing, but actually holding a tool like a crimper, terminating an Ethernet cable, and configuring a switch is entirely different. At Early Code Institute, we offer live, needed equipment training in a conducive environment, providing students with hands-on experience with real-world devices and systems.
This means that we don't offer theoretical lessons but project-based training that helps you function in the job market.
- Bridging the Theory-Practice Gap: Working with actual equipment, configuring and troubleshooting networks. This helps to reinforce theoretical knowledge and make abstract ideas concrete and understandable.
- Increase Confidence: Practical training boosts learners' confidence and prepares them for real-world scenarios.
- Familiarity with Industry Tools: Helps to identify and resolve real-world issues, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Boosting Marketability for Jobs: The live experience becomes your most valuable credential.
- Developing Essential Muscle Memory: Repetitive hands-on practice builds muscle memory, enhancing skills and confidence.
- Portfolio Building: You will build real projects with proof (photos, working setups) that employers care about.
