kids learning in a coding class in Early Code Institute Abuja

Early Code offers engaging summer coding programs for kids, led by experienced instructors who introduce them to the world of programming through hands-on classes and real-world projects.

Parents must note that digital literacy is not only an extra skill, but one of the basic skills a child should have, because future tech products and ventures will be built by the next generation.

While an online learning platform can be convenient for learning tech, a physical and mentored setting can foster deeper engagement and build a sense of community among their peers, and groom young minds to be able to create ideas, build projects, and make an innovative difference.

The Early Code Institute's summer is in multiple groups which allows different age groups to access programs suitable for them. The groups will focus on learning to code to build mini apps, mini games, of web pages.

This will be acheived by learning programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python.

What Age Should a Child Start Coding?

Kids between the ages of 7 to 14 years can start learning to code at Early Code Institute.

It is popular for kids between the ages of 2 and 3 to have curious and eager minds. They start learning how a smartphone works with repeated actions like pressing a button to show a particular feature, and dragging and dropping pictures or images. Their minds are inquisitive to see the various wonders of technology.

The idea is to inculcate computational thinking and logical concepts like sequence, conditions, and loops in a fun, intuitive way and introduce them to the world of coding. Learning subjects like quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and mathematics can lay the foundation for learning text-based programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS, which are essential for web design, interactivity, and software development.

What Are The Best Coding Classes for Kids?

Early Code Institute's coding for kids program in Abuja is structured to ensure kids' engagement and practicality in a supportive, conducive, and safe environment. The classes :

  • Project-Based: The way kids learn is by doing. During coding programs, projects like a calculator, a stop watch, a timer, and game concepts like Tic-Tac-Toe, help them see how they can apply practical code to things they are already familiar with.
  • Led by experienced and patient Instructors: Instructors at Early Code understand how kids can learn by converting complex ideas into simple tasks that can be accomplished. They also foster and create a positive and encouraging atmosphere for all kids.
  • Offers a progressive path: The classes are specially designed to accommodate kids starting from the fundamental concepts and gradually introducing them to more advanced concepts, languages, and programming syntaxes.
  • Collaborative: Kids who like to learn, especially among their peers, will have the opportunity to foster the spirit of teamwork and build communication skills.
  • Provide Immediate feedback: With the physical classes at Early Code, instructors offer real-time assistance to kids who may encounter a bug or need more clarification on a task.

What Will Kids do During Coding Classes?

In Instructor-led coding classes, kids are engaged in various activities designed to make it fun, impactful, and effective. Coding for kids sessions at Early Code involve:

  1. Designing Websites: Kids will be able to learn HTML and CSS to build their first website. The projects in this session come with replicating a popular website and doing web projects on their own, like a personal webpage or fan page.
  2. Creating Mobile prototypes: Using Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, they design interfaces for simple apps like a Calculator, Photo Gallery, Daily Planner, and so on
  3. Debugging Code: Part of the learning process is being able to solve problems and fix errors. Kids will learn how to identify and correct mistakes they encounter in their code.
  4. Projects and Assignment Sessions: Working in a group, they tend to share ideas, divide tasks, and share with the rest of the class. To keep them engaged even at home, assignments are given to them to occupy their time and make sure they under what they are being taught in class.

The emphasis is on hands-on training, working on abstract and realistic concepts that kids can proudly share with their schoolmates after the training.

What is your challenge in going into tech?

A research review from an expert institution, MIT, strongly suggests that children from the early ages of 5 to 7 years can grasp the concept of coding and programming. They form a relationship with computer interfaces at age 2, and the hours spent on these devices could be turned into productivity by mastering a new language or computer skill. If they can learn the alphabet of the English language from the time they can sit up, they can learn a new programming language all the same.
